The active learning classroom on the Mezzanine floor of the library, Grafton 302, is designed for hands-on instruction in how to use the library and other electronic resources. We can also accommodate larger classes in GRA 105, or come to your class elsewhere on campus or online. Classes can include basic orientation to the library, advanced research for upper-level classes, or specific resources suited to any course assignment. All of the library instruction sessions can be customized for individual classes. Reference librarians also offer instruction at regional sites around Virginia. Please contact your liaison librarian if you would like more information on library instruction or would like to schedule a session. Please schedule instruction sessions at least 48 hours in advance.
In addition to synchronous sessions with a librarian, librarians can now load asynchronous library instruction modules customized to your curriculum and assignments directly into your Blackboard course. These asynchronous modules introduce your students to their reference librarian, the library website, up to three topics you think will support your curriculum and assignments best and a short, auto-graded quiz based on the topics chosen.

Librarians are happy to customize these modules to best suit your course and you retain full control over your class and the material. While asynchronous sessions aren't a replacement for time with a librarian, they can help your students become familiar with resources available to them, and introduce them to important research skills.
An online course guide is a research guide specifically designed for a course and/or research project. These guides can cover relevant resources, such as reference sources, databases, and librarian-curated websites. They can also include tutorials on the research process, such as website evaluation, scholarly vs. popular sources, and citation guidance. Course guides can be conveniently linked to Blackboard and will be available on the library website. They are usually made to accompany a library instruction session, but you can request an Online Course Guide separate from In-Class Instruction. If you're interested in having a course guide designed specifically for your class, contact your Librarian Liaison.
Information Literacy, INT 103, is a course taught by reference librarians. Students in this course will begin to develop the research and critical thinking skills necessary for information literacy and lifelong learning. Information literacy is a set of competencies requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to effectively locate, evaluate, and use needed information. This one-credit course fulfills part of the required Research and Information Literacy learning outcome of the College's common curriculum. INT103 is offered both online and on the Staunton campus during the Spring and Fall semesters and online only during the Summer term.
