Direction for Holds and Pickup

Request/Place Hold on items through GLDYS

In order to place a hold, you’ll need to have an account in GLDYS, the library’s catalog. If you haven’t already set up an account, you can do that through My Library Account. For more information on setting up and account, see our Account Setup Page. Click on Set/Reset password to create an account. Your MBU ID# should be 9 digits; if it’s shorter, add enough leading zeros so your number is 9 digits long.

  • Search GLDYS for your book/DVD title. Click on the title link so you see the full description or record.
  • Look for the “Place Hold” button.

  • A form should appear. Please put your cell phone number in the Item Description/Notes box so we can text you when your items are ready for pick up.  If the hold is placed before noon, we will do our best for same-day pick up.

  • You can place up to 10 holds at a time.
  • If you have any problems, contact us at
Pick up in Foyer - Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 12-5 pm
  • Come to the front door of the Library, where the door will be unlocked.
  • Your items will be bundled and identified by name on a table in the foyer.
  • If someone is picking up at the same time, please wait outside until they exit the building.
Check out period
  • The loan period for books will be 8 weeks with the option of renewing for a month, only if there are no other holds on the item. For graduate students, this is a bit shorter than normal in an effort to provide equitable access until interlibrary loan of physical items is possible again. Our previous practice has allowed ILL requests of checked out copies of our holdings.  Other items will have their standard loan period.
  • If you put a hold on an item already checked out, your hold request will be put in a queue and be available when the item returns.
  • When items are returned, they’ll be disinfected and quarantined for 24 hours before being available for check out by another patron.

Borrowing from other libraries:

Mary Baldwin has cooperative library agreements allowing Mary Baldwin students to check out materials from other libraries using a Mary Baldwin ID via the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) Universal Borrowing Program. Checkout policies of the lending institution apply. Please visit the VIVA website for a list of participating institutions.

BOAP students at PVCC, Roanoke and Blue Ridge Community College may use the libraries associated with these regional centers.

All Mary Baldwin students may apply for a Staunton Public Library card with their Mary Baldwin ID. You can then use your public library number to access resources at

Most community colleges and public universities in Virginia extend borrowing and use privileges to all citizens of the commonwealth. Use of electronic material may be restricted to currently enrolled students, but general use of the library and photocopy services on site is allowed.
