search by file type, by adding filetype: and the three letter abbreviation (PPT, PDF, XLS, etc)

find related pages, by searching related: [URL of the website] ~ searches related words

fill in the blanks, by putting an astrix where you want the blanks to be, and Google will fill in the rest

exact phrase search, by putting quotation marks around the exact phrase, and Google will not separate those words in the search

specific site search, by searching for site: [URL], url can be a specific site or a type of site (.org, .edu, .gov)
|
|
ignore words and characters, by using the - sign to signify the words you don't want included in your search

If you're signed into a google account, such as gmail, most likely your searched results are being personally tailored to you based on your previous searching habits. Google keeps track of our searching history and uses it to "better serve" our searching needs, such as bringing up search results based on our current geographic location. However, they also target us with advertisements based off our searching history. If you'd like to turn off your personalized results, you click the globe button in the top right-hand corner of the search results. You can turn off personalized searching permanently, by going to the Search Settings button.
