The British Library Flickr Photo Stream Scanned from the pages of 17th, 18th and 19th century books, the collection (hosted on Flickr) is spectacular for any designer looking for a vintage flourish. Look for curated images of everything from typography and decorative paper to instruments and animals. All images are within the public domain.
Getty Public Domain Content Collection of open access images from the Getty Museum
Library of Congress: Prints & Photgraphs Online Catalog Historical photographs from the Library of Congress. Search by keyword or browse by collection.
Old Book Illustrations A really nice collection of public domain illustrations scanned from old books and vector illustrations that can be modified and distributed for both personal and commercial projects.
Openverse Openverse is a tool that allows users to search over 500 million images that are freely available to be freely used and adapted.
Smithsonian Open Access Access over 4.9 million of the Smithsonian’s images to download, share, and reuse. This includes images and data from across the Smithsonian’s 21 museums, nine research centers, libraries, archives, and the National Zoo.
U.S. National Archives Photostream Documents and Photographs digitized and uploaded to Flickr.
Wikimedia Commons Free access to images, sound, and video files in the public domain or with Creative Commons licenses.
