Visualization

Data visualization allows users a way to understanding your data by putting it in a visual context such as a word cloud, chart, graph, or layered on a map.

Tableau Public
Tableau Public is a free data storytelling application. Create and share interactive charts and graphs, maps, and live dashboards.
RAWGraphs
An open suite of visualization tools that allow you to upload your own tabular data and select from variety of different charts and diagrams.

GIS (geographic information systems) software helps interpret and analyze spacial and geographic data.

ArcGIS Explorer
ArcGIS Explorer Desktop is a free GIS viewer that gives you an easy way to explore, visualize, and share GIS information.
Carto
An open source map making software that allows users to upload their own data to create maps with a wide variety of visualizations.
Google Fusion Tables
With your Google account, you can create a fusion table that allows you various ways to visualize your data, including geographic data. Google calls it "an experimental data visualization web application to gather, visualize, and share data tables."
Palladio
A toolset created by Standford University to allow users to investigate data using a variety of visualizations including geographic analysis.

Text Analysis

TEI: Text Encoding Initiative
This consortium created and maintains the guidlines for the standard text encoding methods of digital texts used by libraries and scholars to allow for preservation and analysis.
TEIWiki
Voyant Tools Voyant tools is a free, easy-to-use text analysis tool. It does not have the features of many more complex programs, but can give good information about word frequency, order, and relationships.
TAPoR3
A list of text analysis tools created and maintained by McMaster University and the University of Alberta.
MALLETT (the Machine Learning for Language Toolkit)
"MALLET is a Java-based package for statistical natural language processing, document classification, clustering, topic modeling, information extraction, and other machine learning applications to text."

Image/Audio Analysis

ImageJ
"ImageJ is a public domain, Java-based image processing program that can display, edit, analyze, process, save, and read many image formats including TIFF, PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS, as well as raw formats. It also can measure distances and angles, create density histograms and line profile plots among many other features."
ImagePlot
"ImagePlot is a free software tool that visualizes collections of images and video of any size. It is implemented as a macro which works with the open source image processing program ImageJ."
Audacity
Audacity is a free open source digital audio editor and recording computer software application. In addition to recording audio from multiple sources, Audacity can be used for post-processing of all types of audio, including podcasts by adding effects such as normalization, trimming, and fading in and out. Audacity also can do audio spectrum analysis using the Fourier transform algorithm.

Omeka
Free software that allows users to display their research, exhibits, and collections online. This platform is used by museums, special collections, universities, and libraries and offers a wide vareity of plugins.
Pachyderm Services
An open-source "multimedia authoring tool."
Knight Lab
Storytelling tools such as maps and timelines that can be used in conjunction with other exhibit and website software.
